Set majestically on the
Atlantic Ocean with mature trees, water hazards and gently rolling
landscape, the course has professionally shaped fairways and highly
acclaimed putting surfaces, a true and fair test of golf. Set on
approximately 300 acres, this PGA championship 18-hole golf course, host
of the PGA West of Ireland Open in 1999, has been uniquely designed by
Christy O'Connor Jnr to highlight and preserve the ancient sites that lie
on its boundaries. On the shoreline behind the 16th tee the remains of a
number of small circular stone huts can be spotted. Between the 2nd and
10th greens is the Rathnapours ring port (the fort of little potatoes.)
Also integrated into the course are the traditional walls of the Galway
region, while the site of an ancient copper and lead mine pre-dating the
16th century, Leadmine Hill, forms the spectacular backdrop to the 13th
hole.
